Description
(Elizabeth, countess of Bristol & duchess of Kingston, courtier and bigamist, c. 1720-88).- Tryal of Elizabeth Calling herself Dutchess Dowager of Kingston, Sixth Day, Royal Family's Box, admission ticket to her trial for bigamy at Westminster Hall, engraved sheet, laid down, folds, small tear in right hand margin along fold, 200 x 120mm., April 1776; and 2 others, engraved portraits of Chudleigh, v.s., v.d. (3). Elizabeth Chudleigh's trial for bigamy. Chudleigh, a maid of honour to the Princess of Wales, married the duke of Kingston in 1769 while separated from, but legally married to, Augustus Hervey, later earl of Bristol. After an eight day trial before her peers she was found unanimously guilty of bigamy and by fleeing the country narrowly avoided the customary punishment of being branded on the hand.
