Description
Stephen J. Ferris [1835-1915] influential Philadelphia painter and etcher of portraits and figure studies, he studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris, under Jean Leon Gerome. He achieved a considerable reputation for his art in both America and Europe and received the prestigious Fortuny Prize for the best portrait, Rome, 1876. Ferris also served for twenty six years as the Instructor of Art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. Offered here is an original etching by Ferris, a portrait of the daughter of Chief Justice Benjamin Chew. Its title "MRS. NICKLIN", done in 1879, after a painting by Gilbert Stuart. This etching, and others by New York Etching Club members, appeared bound into The American Art Review. Image approx. 5-1/2 x 7-1/4" plus margins.
