Appealing rural motif by a follower of Philip Wouwermans, one of the most versatile and prolific Dutch painters of the Golden Age
Oil paintings by the Dutch genre painter Philips Wouwerman are ever so popular due to charming subjects, the skillful light rendering and the atmospheric color palette. The painting depicts the scene of a farmer who has constricted his two horses from the carriage and waters them at a river, while his wife is waiting on the carriage. In the background a boy is sitting at a plank fishing. The skillful combination of detailed depiction, anecdotal narration and atmospheric lighting, make this work from a follower of Wouwerman to a beautiful example of the continued popularity of the genre painter in the 18th century.
The present painting is well presented. There are some abrasions due to the pressure of the frame and there are some larger retouchings in the sky, visible under UV-light. The beautiful black frame is minimally nudged on edges and corners. The wooden panel measures 22 x 25.5 cm, and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 48 x 53 cm. (tm)
