An atmospheric landscape that shows Kallmorgen’s interest in the depiction of rainy weather moods; paintings of the painter fetch up to €60,000 at international auctions

The German artist has captured a view of the Swabian Harburg in rapid, sketchy brushwork. Nestled in a lush green landscape, it is picturesquely situated on a hill. The dramatic cloudy sky, which occupies the largest part of the image, gives a quite realistic impression of the stormy wheatear. The representation of rainy weather moods is often to be found in the artist´s later work.

The painting is signed lower left ‘Fr. Kallmorgen 1914’. On the stretcher it is inscribed with India ink (by different hand?) „Harburg bei Nördlingen“. It is varnished, slightly darkened and retouched in several spots in the region of the sky. On the left there is a tiny paint loss and along the edges there are framing traces. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The painting measures 24.5 x 40.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 32 x 47.3 cm.

Friedrich Kallmorgen (1856-1924)

Friedrich Kallmorgen was born in Altona 1856. He received his first drawing lessons by his uncle Theodor Küchel. In 1875 he visited the preparatory class at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts under Andreas Müller and Ernst Deger. Subsequently he moved to the academy of Art in Karlsruhe, where he studied under the landscape painter Hans Fredrik Gude and stylistically followed the Barbizon school, in combination with Dutch influences. Kallmorgen made many extended national and international journeys. In 1902 he finally received a professorship in the landscape class at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts which he pursued with passion until its end. (fea)
