After his artistic training, Julius Seyler went on a number of studying trips through foreign countries that would serve him later as a great source of inspiration. The present painting depicts an atmospheric fjord landscape with boats and has presumably been painted during or shortly after his stay in Norway. Like many of his early paintings, the present work is characterized by rather dark earthy tones, whereas the broad dynamic brushwork is deeply related to the impressionistic style. During his lifetime, Julius Seyler was regarded alongside well-known artists such as Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt.
The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed lower right ‘J. Seyler’. It is also numbered and inscribed on the verso ‘No VIII J. SEYLER’. The paint surface is slightly dirty due to age. The vertical center bar of the stretcher is minimally visible in the depiction. The gold painted wooden frame is in good condition with light traces of age and use. The framed work measures 92 x 127.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 86 x 120.5 cm.
