This large size painting by Dresden painter Klaus Dennhardt was created in 1992. It depicts the a ‘Rest on the Flight into Egypt’ in a modern interpretation that is characterized by the use of bright colours and loose brushwork. The Holy Family is resting in a forest, surrounded by diverse animals such as a deer, two dogs, chicken, a goose as well as a Putto who is holding a bird at his wings. The view glides towards a far landscape in the background. According the composition, the figures of Josef, Mary and the child Jesus standing on his mother’s lap are equivalent to a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder with the same subject, dated 1504 and nowadays treasured in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin.



The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘Dennhardt 92’ and shows signs wear, such as a tear in the upper right margin, next to Maria that has been backed with tape. The stretcher frame measures 270 x 200 cm.



Klaus Dennhardt (born 1941)

Klaus Dennhardt was born 1941 in Dresden and went to the worker’s- and farmer’s faculty of the Art School till 1961. He began to study at the Dresden Academy of Art in 1963. After his graduation in 1968 he worked as a painter and graphic artist, belonging to the generation of DDR avant-garde artists. He moved to West-Berlin in 1986, but returned to Dresden a little later. Since 2010 he lives and works in Dresden. (cru)
