This lithograph in two colors executed on AF 5 FABRIANO COTTON is a work by the Portuguese artist José de Guimarães from 1986. Depicted is a in its form strongly reduced, bird-like animal. The color of the body is red and the contours are black. De Guimarães developed his own visual language during his military service in Angola and journeys to Asia and Mexico. These are mainly influenced by the rituals and myths of these cultures. Next to a comprehensive printed body of work, the artist has also created sculptures for public space as well as object boxes.



The work is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘José de Guimaraes 86’. The sheet is slightly soiled in the upper right corner. Besides that the work is in very good condition. The dimensions of the sheet are 74.4 x 55.5 cm.



José de Guimarães (b. 1939)

José de Guimarães studied engineering until 1975 at the University of Technology in Lisbon. He began his artistic education with painting and drawing classes at Teresa de Sousa. Afterwards, he took design courses at Gil Teixeira Lopes and courses in printing techniques at the Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses. In 1967, he started studying architecture at the University of Lisbon. The artist has already participated in a large quantity of solo and group exhibitions. Works of his are held by international museums, such as the Rockefeller Center of Art in New York, the Swiss National Library in Bern, the Museo Español de Arte Contemporane in Madrid, the museums of Portugal, the European Parliament in Strasburg, as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels.
