In the late 1970s, Beuys coined the concept of the ‘Social Sculpture’, which meant a creative participation in society through art. The current highest auction record for a similar multiple of Joseph Beuys is more than €3,000

Joseph Beuys' multiple of a false 1 Mark-check thematically approaches his banknote series ‘Kunst=Kapital’, dated between 1979 and 1982. Beuys defined here the creativity of every human being as his main asset, which should be introduced into society. Life and art should approach and enrich each other. With the present false check, Beuys challenged the power of art in the economic fabric.

The check is inscribed with ‘Falschgeld’ [False Money] and signed with ‘Joseph Beuys’ in black felt pen. The work is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The dimensions are 5 x 11.5 cm.

Joseph Beuys (1921-1986)

Born in Krefeld in 1921, Joseph Beuys was one of the most important German artists of the second half of the 20th century. After his military service at the German Air Force and his legendary plane crash in 1944, Beuys began his career as an artist as the master pupil of Ewald Mataré at the Stately Art Academy in Dusseldorf. Early on, the artist received numerous commissions, and in 196, he was called to the Dusseldorf Academy as a professor. Beuys’ works were exhibited at the documenta III in Kassel and the 37th Venice Biennale and honored with many international awards. In 1979, Beuys met Andy Warhol, who created the famous silkscreen portrait of the artist. In 1986, Beuys died at the age of 64 in his studio in Dusseldorf. His works can be found in many international museums, including the Tate Modern in London, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Museum Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
