Karl Otto Götz is one of the most important painters of the 20th century. In the late 1940s, Götz was the only German artist member of the CoBrA group. During that time he published a magazine for art and literature called META, in which he illustrated, among others, the ‘Doppelich’ drawings. These can also be found on the seat of the ‘Original Director's Chair’ presented here, on which the artist sat during an exhibition in honor of his 85th birthday in 1999.

The backrest of the chair is signed ‘K.O. Götz’. The chair is in overall very good condition with only slight signs of use. Its dimensions are 86 x 52 x 41 cm.

Karl Otto Götz (born 1914)

Karl Otto Götz, also known as K.O. Götz, was born in Aachen in 1914 and is considered as the main representative of the German abstract and Art Informel . Götz attended the arts college in Aachen and occupied there primarily with the avant-garde painting. His early work was characterized by Expressionism and Surrealism, and was influenced by works of Max Ernst, Juan Gris, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. In the 1950s he increasingly began with the dissolution of forms and figures. Two years later he began to produce works in an Informel style and mixed technique, which made him internationally the most important representative of the Art Informel and Action Painting. In his late creative period he is concerned with historical events, which he implements in his typical style of painting. (cru)
