Dieter Roth's present stamp print, executed in 1978, shows several blurred stamps in red and purple stamping ink, which are combined with pencil lines. The imprints in turn depict stamps, so that the artistic medium becomes an important content of the image. In the early 1960s, Roth produced his first stamp pictures ?? and since then has always taken up the subject. In his works, Roth experimented with variability in various media, showing particular influences of the Fluxus movement, the Constructivism, the Nouveau Realists and the Dada movement.


The work is monogrammed in pencil with ‘D.R.’ and dated ‘78’ to the lower margin. The back shows the printed lettering ‘EXIL/Paul-Lincke-Ufer 44 A’ with phone number. It is mounted on a blue toned paper and matted under a protective foil. The mat shows tiny mounting holes. The paper dimensions are 7 x 14 cm. The mat is 30 x 40 cm in size.


Dieter Roth (1930-1998)

Dieter Roth, also known as Diter Rot, was born as Karl-Dietrich Roth in 1930 in Hanover. In the 1960s, Roth first began to participate at Happenings and Fluxus events. In the 1970s, he designed a variety of book objects, which are close to the Dada movement, especially Kurt Schwitters. Works by Roth are on display in important museum collections, including the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Sprengel Museum Hannover as well as the Kunstmuseum and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
