Martin Kippenberger’s color offset lithograph ‘Wall St’ from 1993 is based on a collage of the artist and was a contribution to the ‘JFK portfolio ‘, containing 10 works by such famous artists such as Sonderborg, Trockel and Piene, and published by the PCC edition house in Cologne in an edition of 100 copies (+ 10 EA and 20 HC). The present work is a copy aside from this edition, bearing the rare full signature of Kippenberger. The composition, consisting of image and text elements, focuses on a cut-out of a photograph from the New York Stock Exchange behind the street sign of the Wall Street. Beneath are displayed various stickers along with word and image fragments as well as, to the right, an image series that provocatively refers to the famous street. In his works, Kippenberger continuously challenged the mechanisms of the Western society, so that Wall Street as a symbol of the American financial industry certainly represented a controversial subject.
The work signed and dated ‘Kippenberger 93’ lower center. It is in good condition, showing light scratches and small color losses. The dimensions are 60 x 65.5 cm.
Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997)
Martin Kippenberger’s work is characterized by his provocative personality and his extreme positions in diverse styles and media. Kippenberger was named the enfant terrible of his generation. He graduated from The University of Fine Arts of Hamburg, where he was inspired amongst others by Sigmar Polke. Kippenberger’s refusal to adapt to a specific style resulted in an extremely prolific and diverse work, which includes sculptures, paintings, works on paper, photographs, installations and prints. Kippenberger’s art work was honored already during his lifetime by exhibitions in international museums. Today, many of his works are on display in important museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.
