Description
89. Figural Hard Stone Dress Cane-Ca. 1900-The handle is cut of a shimmering tiger eye to depict an eagle head with a beautiful feather coat and strong and curving beak. The carving takes advantage of the golden hues of the stone to increase its visual appeal while a pair of inset crystal eyes adds interest and liveliness to the predatory bird rendering. Ebony shaft with filigree silver collar with scrolls and flowers and a horn ferrule. This desirable cane, where function meets beauty, demonstrates a level of quality and elaboration that could only be afforded by the wealthiest patrons. It has affinities to the creations of Carl Fabergé and is contemporary to the legendary Objects of Vertu produced in St Petersburg before WWI. However, it echoes much of London work of the period idiosyncrasies and survived intact.-H. 3 ½” x 2 ¾”, O.L. 38 ¼”
