Dual Purpose Fishing Rod Cane-Ca. 1890-Fashioned of a straight bamboo with a natural bulb as knob and carved with a flying eagle obviously rescuing a monkey from a furious giant snake coiling around the shaft. The carving is fine and precise and the involved dramatics are beautifully rendered and accented with dark highlights. The brass ferrule can be removed to reveal the three elements pole which fit in one another and telescope out and become a functional fishing device of consistent, nearly 140” length.
