Property from the Estate of Dr. Ziviello
I met Dr.and Mrs. Alfred Ziviello about 30 years ago, when they stopped by old gallery on 74th Street and Madison in search of Americana. They had been in the area viewing the galleries and had their eye on a work by Calder. I loved the fact that the Doctor was a collector of a wide range of items with one common theme– Quality. Because he was an excellent surgeon, he was more observant of details than the average person. Mrs. Ziviello is a great cook and I truly looked forward to visits at their home, to discuss a wide range of subjects….usually centering around art! On a fishing trip Montauk together with his son David, just hearing his description of the physiology of the large shark that I had caught—before I released it—was impressive! The tuna caught that day was carved up for dinner by the only one truly qualified—the surgeon, Dr. Ziviello.
They purchased many fine examples of early American antiques and used this same discriminating eye to build an equally well-chosen collection of contemporary art most of it purchased from the respected Madison Avenue dealer, Jane Kahan. Works by Henry Moore, Picasso, and Calder were scattered throughout the home and passionately enjoyed by the couple. I visited with Dr. and Mrs. Ziviello shortly before his untimely passing in January, 2014 and we discussed the fact that he would like to sell his modern collection at Keno Auctions with conservative pre-sale auction estimates.
Keno Auctions is honored to offer some exemplary examples of Modern and Contemporary art by artists Frank Stella (lot 7), Sam Francis (lot 8) Alexander Calder (lot 9), Pablo Picasso (lot 39-41), Marc Chagall (lot38) and Martha Walter (lot 43).
