Description
Three poems handwritten by the poet Yitzchak Katzenelson, 1935-36. Signed.
1. "MiShirei HaAretz". A three-verse poem, starting with the words: "sleep, my son…".
2. "Frishman", a four-verse poem, about the author and literary critic David Frishman.
3. "Le-N"S", a seven-verse poem, starting with the words" Mi Millel lanu…". Written in honor and in memory of Nahum Sokolov who died in the same year. Tear on lower part of the leaf, with text omission.
Yitzchak Katzenelson (1886-1944) - Jewish-Polish poet and educator, published poems in Yiddish and in Hebrew. Was the principal of the Jewish school in Lodz and visited Eretz Israel twice. During the first years of WW II was in the Warsaw Ghetto and witnesses the mass extermination of Warsaw Jews including his wife and two sons. Between the years 1943-44 joined the Partisan organization "Dror" and wrote the "Song of the Murdered Jewish People ". Katzenelson was sent with his son to the Vittel concentration camp in France where he wrote in his diary all the horrors that he witnessed. In May 1944 was murdered with his son in Auschwitz. Several of his poems were set to music and became very popular. The Beit Lochamei HaGeta'ot Museum is named after him. Attached are two newspaper-cuttings about the poet. Average height 17 cm. Good-fair condition, spotting.
