Coastal Scene by P. Van Vloten, Van Gogh's Teacher

P. Van Vloten (Dutch, 19th century). A finely rendered oil on canvas, signed l.l., depicting a small vessel ashore; 9.5 x 18 in. (sight).

Mr. Van Vloten, for whom little biographical information is known, is mentioned specifically in one of Vincent Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo (published by Stone, p. 12), where the artist says "I have read a book on art by Van Vloten and did not quite agree with him, and it was very learned."

Condition

Minor craquelure, otherwise in excellent, unrestored condition.
