Description
Portrait of Prominent Cincinnatian Joseph Longworth

American, mid-19th century. Oil on canvas, housed in a gilt frame. A portrait of Joseph Longworth (1813-1883), of the esteemed Cincinnati, OH family, as a young man. Unsigned; label on verso reading William Wiswell/Pictures, Frames & Looking Glasses; 27.75 x 22.75 in. (sight).

Note: The sitter was the only son of Nicholas Longworth (1783-1863), the Cincinnati banker, winemaker and patron of the arts, and father of Maria Longworth, the founder of Rookwood Pottery. The portrait was passed down through the consignor's family for 50 years, after being bequeathed to them by Mary Nichols, daughter-in-law to Maria Longworth. William Wiswell, whose gallery label is found on the frame, was a prominent Cincinnati gallery owner and contemporary of the sitter.

A portrait of Joseph Longworth by Thomas Satterwhite Noble (1835-1907), ca 1884, is in the collection of Cincinnati Art Museum.
