Description
Original colored pencil drawing, horse and rider, executed on Air France writing paper, by/attributed to Salvador Dali (1904-1989). Signed. Undated but probably circa 1970's. [The front cover of the tablet which originally contained this drawing was sold in our saleroom in July 2014 and was inscribed "Pour Amelia Hommage de Dali".] 11 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches. Very good overall condition. Unframed.
Provenance: Presumably given to Amelia White (Sydney, Australia) directly by the artist, who she met while traveling one summer as a young girl. Amelia apparently had a special interest in horses. The present sketch, one of thirteen, was part of a tablet of sketches which was sold privately to a book dealer and subsequently acquired by the consignor's family, circa 1985 or earlier.
AUTHENTICATION AND PROVENANCE OF ATTRIBUTED LOTS (and lots described as "in the manner of"): This lot is being offered as "attributed to" (or in the manner of) the named artist. We have no specific documentation to prove or disprove its authenticity, nor have we submitted it to any expert or committee of experts for review or forensic examination. Authentication is not an exact science. Contrary opinions may exist; our opinion is not based on any specific expertise. The signature, style, and composition of the work seem absolutely correct and are similar to pieces of known authenticity and provenance which we have seen or sold, although neither we nor the consignor can guaranty that the present lot is wholly or partly by the ascribed artist. REGARDING PROVENANCE, we must rely to an extent on information provided to us by the consignor, family records or documents, estate papers, and/or other third parties. We provide whatever information we have available. If you have questions about a lot's provenance, please ask them prior to bidding. Unless stated otherwise, no documents, letters, or additional information concerning provenance will accompany the lot. We do not obtain written affidavits from consignors regarding provenance, thus bidders should be aware that Preston Hall Gallery is not always able to verify all facts regarding a lot's provenance. If you require absolute certainty regarding a lot's attribution or history of ownership and if the description of the lot in question does not address these issues to your satisfaction, WE STRONGLY URGE YOU NOT TO BID ON THE LOT.
