Description
French, 19th century (circa 1860). Fine pair of F. Barbedienne bronze and rouge griott marble nine light candelabra. Each three part candelabrum consisting of a baluster form painted bronze urn finely cast by the F. Barbedienne foundry in Paris, France supporting an elaborate foliate scroll bronze doré armature for the nine candle holders, all set on a multi-tiered bronze doré accented and a fluted rouge griott marble base supported at each corner by a foliate scroll ornament ending in a lion's paw foot. Continuous low relief scene around the urn depicting an ancient figural mythological scene beginning at the left with a goddess holding two doves and ending at the right with a women pouring a libation on an altar tended by a priest or priestess; in between are four female attendants holding a ram to be slaughtered; each of the urn's two handles consisting of a ferocious mythological animal head with two long curling horns. Signed "F. BARBEDIENNE" on circular foot above leaf decorated border. Height 34.5", width (across candleholders) 15". Condition
The overall quality of the bronze is excellent, condition very good. Minor abrasions to patination. No bobeches. One candlecup has liner. Remnants of wax in cups. Minute flea bite to edge of marble, not easily visible.
