One From The Heart - Final Draft Screenplay/Breakdown Script - This is a great piece of Hollywood History. Francis Ford Coppola was riding high with the two "Godfather" movies and then "Apocalypse Now" (all three listed in the top 25 great American films of all time). With this kind of power and money, he brought his Zoetrope Production Company to Hollywood and bought a studio with his mission of creating a creative atmosphere like the old MGM studio system. He put actors under exclusive contracts, as well as top crew people. He also hired some of Hollywood's legends like Gene Kelly to be technical and creative advisors. Ironically, his first venture was to be a "small budget" feel-good love story about a group of people in Las Vegas on a July 4th weekend, called "One From The Heart" (1982). However, he decided to make Vegas look like a fantasy, so he recreated most of Las Vegas, including the airport, on his sound stages, and utilized the newest in video-playback and digital technology. Therefore the budget ballooned to over 25 million dollars. Although spectacular to look at, the film grossed less than a million dollars and Coppola was forced to file for bankruptcy. In fact, Gene Kelly was reported to have said after seeing the film in previews: "I would sum up the movie this way: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, genius loses studio". These are two rare scripts from this infamous production, including the original Final Draft script and the breakdown script. They were both Leslie McCarthy-Frankenheimer’s scripts. McCarthy-Frankenhemier was the legendary set decorator on the film, (she is also well known for her work on such classics as "Blade Runner", "Blues Brothers", and "Star Trek: Voyager"), and includes her hand-written production notes.
