Norma Shearer Handwritten Postcard - One of the most beloved royalties of Hollywood, who literally started at the birth of the motion picture, was Norma Shearer. She came to Hollywood in the early 1920's, as an extra, but was discovered by legendary MGM executive Irving Thalberg (who was not even 20 years old at the time). He married here and put her in a series of films that showed her astonishing beauty and talent. In fact, she was the “shoo-in” to play Scarlett O’Hara, in "Gone With The Wind", until Vivian Leigh burst on the scene during the start of filming. Several years after Thalberg died tragically and prematurely, Shearer married a famous ski instructor named Martin Arrouge, who was eleven years younger than she. However the marriage lasted over forty years until her own death in 1983. Both were avid skiers. To prove the point, this is an extremely rare handwritten postcard from Normal Shearer to her good friends, actor Van Johnson and his wife Evie. It is written on a postcard from one of the most luxurious and popular ski resorts in the world, the Grand Hotel in Portillo, Chile. On the front, Norma has drawn in the “ski lift” to show just how high it is up the mountain range, with an “X” and a handwritten “us”. Norma writes on the back "You would love it here!!!!". The postcard is signed by Norma as “Norma and Martin”, and postmarked December 1957. Autographs and handwritten notes from this Hollywood icon and legend are extremely hard to come by. A magnificent collectable. Comes from Van Johnson’s personal collection, and includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
