Item Details
Description
Chinese Carved and Polychromed Wood Figure of a Buddhist Monk, probably early/mid-Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the standing figure with a serene expression, his hands folded in prayer, decorated throughout with polychrome pigments and gilt accents, h. 29-3/4", w. 13-1/4". Provenance: Estate of Frances Devany Shackelford, Little Rock, Arkansas. A similar figure was in the Sarkisian Collection, Denver, Colorado, before being sold at Bonham's San Francisco, California, in June 2013.
Condition
Craquelure, flaking, and losses to paint and finish throughout. Deep cracks around the figure's wrists and hands. Chipping to the back reveals a carved out cavity partially obscured by a loose plank of wood and remnants of paper stuck to the figure. Losses to pigment around the back opening. Scuffs to underside with part of a paper label still attached. Despite the wear, colors and gilt are still bright and clearly articulated. Wear is commensurate with age, display and some exposure to the elements.
