Description
Assembled Five-Piece Edwardian and Later Sterling Silver Tea and Coffee Set, hallmarked London, 1902-1903, by Reid & Sons, including a teapot, h. 4-1/2", l. 10-3/4", an open sugar bowl, h. 4-1/8", w. 8-1/2", and a cream jug, h. 3-3/4", l. 6-3/4", with a coffeepot hallmarked London, 1900-1901, by Edward Barnard & Sons, h. 8-3/4", l. 10", and a hot milk jug hallmarked London, 1934-1935, by John Marshall Spink & Son, h. 8", l. 8-3/4", each with a squat ovoid body decorated with a band of rocaille scrolls on a matte ground, with leafy-mantled classical maiden's masques on the rims, the pots with crested wooden handles, 108.22 total t. oz. (including wooden handles). Provenance: Purchased in 1967 at the auction of the Jamaica Old House of Major Baur of Nova Scotia.
Condition
Overall Condition: Good. A handsome set with scattered scuffs, dents, dings and pips, the significant condition issues as follows. The teapot has a 1-1/2" diameter dent on one cartouche, with a much smaller dent on the opposing cartouche and another just below it. The open sugar bowl has a shallow 3/4" diameter dent near one handle, with a compression dent at the base of the opposing handle. The cream jug has a flat, shallow 5/8" diameter dent near one handle. The hot water jug has a 1-1/2" crescent-shaped dent to the side of one cartouche, with a thumbprint-sized dent at the top of the opposing one, and a 1-1/4" circular dent on the lower body, below and to one side of the spout. These dents should all be easily removed by a competent silversmith. Nice chasing throughout. The three-piece set hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "g" for 1902-1903; and 4) the "TAR/FJL/CLR" maker's mark of Reid & Sons (Thomas Arthur Reid, Francis James Langford & Christian Leopold Reid). The coffeepot hallmarked (on the collar, facing the handle) with: 1) & 2) [as above]; 3) the date letter "e" for 1900-1901; and 4) the "WJ/MS/B/RD" maker's mark of Edward Barnard & Sons (Walter, John, Michael & Stanley Barnard, with Robert Dubock); additionally engraved on the underside "Reid & Sons / Newcastle-on-Tyne". The hot milk jug hallmarked (on the collar, facing the handle): with 1) & 2) [as above]; 3) the date letter "t" for 1934-1935, and 4) the "IMS" maker's mark of John Marshall Spink & Son.
