Description
Robert Carter Nicholas (1793-1857) United States Senator from Louisiana. Born in Hanover, Virginia, he served in the War of 1812 as a captain and major. He attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and moved to Louisiana, where he became a sugar planter in Terrebonne Parish in 1820. Nicholas was elected as a Jacksonian (later, a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator-elect Charles E.A. Gayarre and served from January 13, 1836, to March 3, 1841. He was Secretary of State of Louisiana from 1843 to 1846, when he resigned; he died in Terrebonne Parish in 1857. Interment was in the Burthe vault, St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans. SIGNATURE CLIPPED FROM ALBUM PAGE.
