This print shows a sketch for a project of wrapping the Columbus monument in Barcelona. In 1975 the artists began with the planning, but received twice a rejection of the city of Barcelona. In 1984, the mayor at that time finally has granted his approval, but Christo and Jean Claude already had focused on other projects then. So the monument was never wrapped.

The lithograph in colors is signed and numbered upper right in pencil ‘Christo 8/75’, and titled upper left in the print ‘Wrapped Monument to Cristobal Colón (Project for Passeig de Colóm, Plaça Porta de la Pau)’. On recto the sheet is slightly, on verso stronger darkened and in good condition. The frame is in good condition, too, with slight signs of wear. The full-sheet image measures 75.8 x 55.6 cm. The framed dimensions are 76.7 x 56.2 cm.

Christo (b. 1935) und Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009)

Christo (born 1935) grew up as the son of an industrial family in Bulgaria. Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) is the daughter of a French military family and she was educated in France and Switzerland. Jeanne-Claude died on 18.11.2009 in New York City. Christo studied from 1953 to 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 1957, he studied for one semester at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. Since 1958, he lived in Paris where he and Jeanne-Claude met. From very early on in his artistic activity, Christo began wrapping objects. He followed the idea that the act of wrapping makes visible the banality and the excess of most objects that exist in our world. Jeanne-Claude always supported him in the realization by negotiating with mayors, interest groups, environmental activists and residents to receive approval for the projects. (fea)
