The etching series ‘Five Americans’ was published in 1967 in an edition of 200 copies + LX. The present sheets display the motifs ‘Benjamin Franklin’, ‘George Washington’, ‘Thomas Edison’ and ‘Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’.

The four etchings are each signed lower right in pencil ‘Dalí’ and each numbered differently in roman numerals lower left in pencil as one of LX copies. The sheets are each mounted behind a glass along the reverse sheet edges, the mounts showing slightly through on recto. There are stray small foxmarks. The condition overall is good. The lower bar of one frame is broken and splintered, the other frames are in good condition with slight signs of wear. The plates measure each about 15.3 x 12.6 cm, the sheets each around 37.5 x 27.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 40.2 x 30.2 cm.

Salvador Dalí (1904-1989)

The Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Salvador Dalí was one of the main representatives of Surrealism. Already during his school days he took private painting and drawing classes and studied from 1922 at the Academia San Fernando in Madrid, but was expelled for disorderly conduct in 1926. In 1929, Dalí joined the Surrealists in Paris and met Gala, his muse and future wife. Today his dreamy works, influenced by the unconscious, are displayed in collections of important international works, influenced from the unconscious, are displayed in collections of important international museums.
