The etching originates from Richard Hamilton, who is regarded a pioneer of the Pop art movement. The etching dates to 1949 and was published once again in 1977 by the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung in Hamburg. The print is titled ‘Reaper (a)’ and depicts a harvester constructed of filigree rods.



The etching is signed right below the depiction in pencil ‘R. Hamilton’. Verso are ‘griffelkunst’ stamp and inscriptions in pencil (by another hand). The print is in very good condition with minimal marginal wear. On the reverse is an adhesive stripe at the upper margin. The plate measures 17.4 x 24.7 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 28.5 x 33.6 cm.



Richard Hamilton (1922-2011)

Richard Hamilton is regarded one of the pioneers of the Pop art movement with his collage ‘Just what is it that makes today’s home so different, so appealing?’ from 1956. He took his beginnings in 1936, when he enrolled at the Westminster Technical College and at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design at the same time. He then went on to study painting and drawing at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1938 until 1940 and from 1948 until 1951 at the Slade School of Fine Art. He had his first successes with prints. Hamilton taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and at the University of Durham. Hamilton was a member of the Independent Group, a group of artists and writers that was initiated in the fifties at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. In 1986, a poster design of his was part of the ‘White Album’ of the Beatles. He was a participant of the documenta 4 and 7, as well as of the Venice Biennale in 1993. A comprehensive collection of his oeuvre is listed at the Tate Gallery. Amongst other awards, he was honored in 1983 with the World Print Council Award and in 1988 with the Turner Prize. (tm)
