This work is a photogravure with the title ‘Maahantai’ of an abstract construction with seemingly mechanical elements. This fabulous print is copy 49 from the total edition of 100 copies. An example of this print is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London.



The work is in pencil signed and dated lower right ‘Eduardo Paolozzi 1975’, numbered lower left ‘49/100’. The sheet is mounted with adhesive stripes under a mat. The sheet is in very good condition. The frame shows traces of wear. The plate measures 62.2 x 42.6 cm, the sheet 71.2 x 50.1 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 83.6 x 56.7 cm.



Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005)

Eduardo Paolozzi studied at St Martin’s School of Art and at Slade School of Art. In 1947, he went to the École des Beaux-Arts to Paris, where he met Giacometti, Arp, Dubuffet, Léger and Brancusi. He was a member of the pop art group Independent Group. He participated in the documenta II, III, IV and VI in Kassel. In 1960, he represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale, where he was awarded with the David-E.-Bright-Prize. Since 1979, he taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and from 1955 until 1958 sculpture at the St Martin’s School of Art. The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf showed his prints and sculptures in a solo exhibition in 1968. The Yorkshire Park held a large exhibition in 1994 for his 70th birthday. Paolozzi taught between 1960 and 1962 as a guest lecturer at the Hamburg University of the Arts, received a professorship for ceramic at the Fachhochschule Cologne in 1977, and from 1981 until 1989 at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. In 1979 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, 1986 Sculptor of Ordinary for Scotland and he was knighted in 1989. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art possesses main parts of his collection, and a room has incorporated pieces of his original studio. (tm)
