The two lithographs by the German artist show figural scenes in which several men with hats lost in thought are sitting, reclining or laying in a not precisely defined environment. The works are executed in deft line and skillfully composed.
The two lithographs are each signed lower right in pencil ‘Thum’. And each titled lower left in pencil ’Dolce far niente’ and ‘Mittag(…) (?)’. The sheets are slightly darkened, one additionally shows minor defects in the edges and is slightly trimmed at the lower margin, affecting the title. The frames are in good condition with slight signs of wear. The images measure 27.5 x 36.7 cm und 27.5 x 38.2 cm. The framed dimensions are 54 x 55.5 cm resp. 42.5 x 52.5 cm.
Elfriede (Erich) Thum (1886-1952)
The Berlin-born artist Elfriede Thum studied at the University of Lausanne, where she met her future husband, the writer Rolf Lauckner. She trained herself with the painter Charles Johann Palmié based in Dresden. Thum’s first exhibition took place in 1912 in the Berlin gallery Cassirer. Therefore, she adopted the pseudonym of Erich Thum, under which she painted from then on. The artistic model for her paintings, considered degenerate during the Nazi regime, were the works by the pointillist painter Giovanni Segantini, who was considered a master of the plain air painting. Today, works by Thum are part of major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. (fea)
