Partial Autograph Letter unsigned, on stationery of American Express Company, July 24, 1898. 4pp. To “Aunt Mamie”, Kinderhook, NY
“…I did not get to Klondyke. We had every arrangement made and on declaration of war, two of our party gave up going as they had large families dependent on them so that broke up our party. I regret it very much. One young man from our city went with a party. He writes that they have struck it rich. A great many went from Syracuse and all are having success….” Written in the fifth month of the Spanish-American War – and two years after the discovery of gold in the Klondike, by which time tens of thousands of hopeful prospectors had flooded into Alaska – most being sorely disappointed in their hopes of “striking it rich”
