This lot comprises one original wooden case with twelve bottles of 1991 vintage Château Montrose from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux.

With a vineyard area of around 1,250 hectares located directly on the left bank of the Gironde, Saint-Estèphe forms the northernmost appellation in Bordeaux. Because of its proximity to the sea and the associated small differences in climate, the wines feature higher tannin levels, a more powerful structure and somewhat higher acidity than those of Southern neighbors. Most vineyards located here attempt to balance this with a higher proportion of Merlot in their wine compositions.

Château Meyney is located in the same area and is considered to be among the vineyards that laid the foundations for winegrowing in Bordeaux. It was proven that an abbey was located here whose monks produced wine from as early as the 13th century. This tradition has remained unaltered and continues to this day. During the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855, only 5 Châteaus in Saint-Estèphe made the cut. Château Cos d‘Estournel and Château Montrose as Deuxièmes Crus, Calon-Ségur as Troisième Cru, Lafon Rochet as Quatrième Cru and Cos Labory as Cinquièmes Cru. While the three top estates have underpinned their position impressively in the last 20 years, it must be said that the others have oftentimes not made the most of their location.

1991 is one of these often underrated Bordeaux vintages. Although it is not a top vintage like 1990, there are many nice surprises to be found.

The 1991 vintage Montrose was rated 88 points by Robert Parker in 1998. René Gabriel last rated the wine 17 out of 20 points in 2011.

The fill level is excellent (into neck). The original wooden case, labels and capsules are in perfect condition.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose, known as “Latour of Saint-Estèphe” amongst wine enthusiasts, is one of the most famous and probably also one of the best wine estates in the world. It achieved the rank of Deuxième Cru in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, although the reputation and quality of the wines have only improved since then. The winery was owned by the Charmolüe family from 1896 to 2006, until it was bought by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, after Martin Bouygues tried the 1989 vintage Montrose at a dinner party and declared he would buy Château Montrose straight away, if it was ever for sale. Hervé Berland has run the winery since April 2012. He previously ran the world-famous Château Mouton-Rothschild, one of the Premier Cru estates, for over thirty years.

Château Montrose has 69 hectares of vineyard, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65 %), Merlot (25 %), Cabernet Franc (8 %) and Petit Verdot (2 %). The vines have an average age of 45. The wine matures in French oak barrels, of which 60 % are new and 40 % one year old, over a period of 16 to 18 months.
