Description
Greece, ca. 4th century BCE, probably from Tarentum. Tall pottery statuette, showing Leda standing contraposto, nude save cloak over her arm and shoulder, holding the swan close to her body. The swan was actually the God Zeus in "sheep's clothing" and he seduces the beautiful Leda and produces two children - Helen and Polydeuces. 10-3/8" H.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
