Description
Northern Italy, Etruscan Culture, ca. 6th - 5th century BCE.. A very fine and large terracotta pelike, slipped in white with brown/black design. Across center of vessel is a band of large fish, each painted with appropriate fins and open mouths. Below is a band of geometric style horses, running with exaggerated sloped backs and open mouths. At the bottom and top of body are inward facing triangular patterns, with sets of horizontal running parallel lines throughout. Neck, rim, and handles continue this triangular design pattern. The inclusion of both fish and horses creates a very interesting binary of land and see in this vessel, not typical for the type. 17"H.
