Description
Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed "A. Einstein." One page, 6.25" x 6.75" (sight), on his personal letterhead, in German, Old Lyme [Connecticut], July 4, 1935, to Sarah F. Brandes of the Bralans Lecture Bureau, in full and in translation: "Since I live over the summer pretty far from the Saybrook station, it would probably be more beneficial if you could explain to me your plan in writing. You can be sure by my punctual response to your letter." Several small spots of foxing. Matted with a photograph of Einstein and framed to an overall size of 25.25" x 17.25".
Einstein's letter came in response to a June 29, 1935, letter from Brandes (included in this lot) which reads, in part: "You will perhaps be good enough to remember me in connection with my activities in regard to the present German situation . . . At this time I have a proposal to make to you whereby you will receive a considerable sum of money to use in any way you see fit in alleviating the conditions of the German refugees. I will greatly appreciate your permitting me to call on you to discuss this matter." Einstein fled Germany for the United States shortly after the appointment of Adolf Hitler as chancellor.
