Description
This photograph captures the moment right before Churchill announced the signing of a document of surrender by Germany to Allied forces at the advance headquarters of the American army at Rheims, France, earlier the previous day. In his broadcast, he said, "The German war is therefore at an end. . . . We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead. Japan with all her treachery and greed, remains unsubdued. . . . We must now devote all our strength and resources to the completion of our task, both at home and abroad. . . . Advance, Britannia!" Japan surrendered four months later (September 2, 1945).
In 2000, this very photograph sold at Sotheby's for £17,250 ($28,000 USD).
