Description
[Slavery]. Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee III Document Signed. One printed page, 6.5" x 8.25", Richmond, January 25, 1794. Lee, the father of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, was serving as the ninth governor of Virginia, when he placed his name to this circular, presumably addressed to county courts regarding the treatment of slaves, in part: "You will instruct your Clerk, in all future cases of the condemnation of slaves, to forward to the Executive, the proceedings of the court previous to the sentence being carried into effect, whether the condemned person be considered as an object of mercy or not." Unevenly toned, especially at the right edge. Two small pinholes near the right edge. Separation of the folds has been repaired on the verso.
