Description
Robert Morris Autograph Letter Signed and Bound into a Two Volume Set of George Morgan's The True Patrick Henry with additional documents and engravings. Tipped into the first volume (after the table of contents), this one page letter by Declaration of Independence signer and Revolutionary War financier, Robert Morris, measures 5" x 7.5", dated October 28, 1797, to John Nicholson stating that he has "searched and examined every Paper I have out here for the letter of the Trustees dated 30 July, but it is not here." Light ink ghosting at the right side. The text of the letter is bold. John Nicholson, one of the wealthiest men in America at the time, partnered with Morris in a series of unsuccessful land deals, landing both men deeply in debt. Nicholson was sent to debtor's prison and sued Morris. Morris was eventually arrested and imprisoned until 1801. Nicholson died in prison in 1800.
The book itself was published in Philadelphia by J.B. Lippincott Company in 1907. 8vo, xi, 198; 492. Bound in leather over boards with the seal of the United States in gilt on the front and rear boards and titles in gilt on the spine. Front and rear boards of Volume II are detached. Several other documents are attached within, including two pay orders signed by Revolutionary War general and politician, Thomas Mifflin; two pay orders signed by Continental Congress member, John Bayard; two pay orders signed by U.S. Speaker of the House Frederick Muhlenberg; et al. A Patrick Henry receipt attached before the table of contents is not genuine.
