This vase with lid lidded and exotic Art Deco decor in the form of stylized flowers, leaves and herons was designed by the German artist Kurt Wendler around 1920 for the porcelain series called ‘Indra’ by the porcelain factory Philipp Rosenthal in Selb. The interesting colors, the Far East and shape of the body as well as the stylized decor correspond to the taste of the Art Deco period.
The vase bears the maker’s mark on the bottom with green underglaze stamp and blue ‘N’'overglaze. It is in good condition with restored lid, the decor minimally worn. Its height measures 32 cm.
Kurt Wendler (1893-1980)
Kurt Wendler was born in Marburg in 1893. He attended the School of Horticulture (1911-12) and then started self-educated with painting and drawing. Moving to Berlin Wendler came into contact with Philip Rosenthal, for whom he designed various décors, including the Indra and Asra porcelain, which he presented in 1919 at the Leipzig Spring Fair. In addition, he designed drafts for the Basket Factory ‘Korbkunst Hildburghausen’ as well as for the cardboard manufactory Max. & Co.
