Animal sculptures have been enjoying great popularity since the beginning of the last century. Again and again artists perceived it as a major challenge to capture the liveliness and nature of an animal. Depending on the prevailing taste, epoch and artistic personality different objective were in the foreground. Thus Vienna Bronzes show a lifelike richness of detail, often iridescent colors and vibrant vitality in rendering fur or feathers. The English sculptor Jonathan Knight in contrast, dispenses entirely with details, favoring reduced forms. His badger appears no less alive, but also calm and serene. Due to the smooth surface and its pleasant feel, the soft fur can almost be sensed. The irregular dark patina increases the lifelike effect. The animal is rendered approximately in life-size, which adds further to its appeal.
The sculpture is signed and numbered on the badger’s tail ‘J. KNIGHT 3/9‘. It is 56 cm long, 23.5 cm high and in very good condition with only minor signs of age and wear.
