Description
Gaffney, SC had two national banks. This $20 blue seal is from the early bank that changed its name from The National Bank of Gaffney to The First National Bank of Gaffney, just months before The Merchants and Planters Bank nationalized in 1914. We can assume that was a bit of old school gamesmanship to let the good folks in Cherokee County know that charter 5064 was the original national bank in town. Gaffney was the only town in Cherokee County to issue national currency. Very few notes show up from this location and most are in similar to condition to the note here, which is VG but free of any serious condition issues. It has dark stamped signatures of Maynard Smyth and Charles Wieghman Hames.
