Item Details
Description
Agur, book of halachot by Rabbi Yaakov Baruch Landau [Napoli, c. 1490]. Incunabula. [171] leaves. 20 cm. Glosses in an antiquated hand on leaf [50] and [142].
Early halachic work authored by Rabbi Yaakov Baruch Landau. He was born in Ashkenaz about 600 years ago. His father, Rabbi Yehuda, was a disciple of the Maharil – the patriarch of Ashkenazic customs. Rabbi Yaakov Baruch moved to Italy where he learned and taught. His year of birth is unknown, and the exact date his death is also unknown [around. 1490].
See Hebrew catalogue description for more information regarding the content of the book.
This was the first book with approbations and the first Torah work printed during its author's lifetime (!). During this era, most printed works were from the Tanach. There wasn't even a complete printed Talmud, only solitary tractates left the presses. Only two other halachic works had been printed: the Mishneh Torah of the Rambam and Arba Turim. Sefer HaAgur was a popular halachic work and it was printed a few times during that era (three editions of the work were printed before the Shulchan Aruch was first printed).
This copy includes 123 of the original 171 featuring the primary component of the book. The entire book, including "Sefer Chazon" consists of 186 leaves. Professional reproductions of the missing leaves have been added – through the end of Agur without the Sefer Chazon and later supplements.
Original leaves: [9-72] [74-108] [125-148].
Magnificent, new leather binding. The title page and additional leaves are professional reproductions. Tears, worming holes and blemishes – professionally restored. As said, this book was professionally restored and is fine-very fine condition.
