Description
An American money note for $8. Charlestown, South Carolina colony, December 23, 1777.
[1] Leaf. 7*11 cm. Several signatures on the back of the note that are difficult to identify. Near the word NO, '77' is written in pen. There are some unique characteristics to this note: under the banner 'Death to Counterfeiting' are the Hebrew letters ג', כ', כ', ק' surrounding the number 13:0:0 (apparently indicating the number of colonies). Beside them are Greek letters, not Hebrew equivalent. The accepted explanation for this phenomenon is that it was necessary to make counterfeiting the note difficult, but it is unclear why these particular letters were chosen. Such notes were printed in the colonies during the Revolutionary War as part of their own desire to break away from Britain, and they replaced the Spanish note of 8 pesos, which was commonly used before British currency. Well kept in a decorative new leather sheath. Very good condition.
