Item Details
Description
This is a vintage black & white real photograph, circa 1910-20's.

Handwritten at the bottom is "Frozen tree" Gatun Lake.

Gatun Lake is an artificial lake in central Panama that was formed by the damming of the Chagres River during the construction of the Panama Canal between 1907 and 1913. At the time it was created, Gatun Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world, and the dam was the largest earth dam. It is a major link in the Panama Canal system.

The damming of the river flooded the originally wooded valley and almost a century later, the stumps of old mahogany trees can still be seen rising from the water. There are several theories about the origin of the name "Panama." Some believe that the country was named after a commonly found species of trees.

SIZE: Approx. 3 1/4" x 5 1/2".
