Description
Komsomolets! Vse knigi nuzhnie tebe ty naidesh’ v tvoikh komsomol’skikh magazinakh Krasnye Vskhody” [Komsomol Members! You’ll find all the books you need in your “Red Shoots” Komsomol Bookstores], a poster by an anonymous artist. Published by Novaya Moskva, Moscow,1925, 79.5 x 53.5 cm.
The Novaya Moskva [New Moscow] publishing house was organized in 1922 by the Moscow Soviet. In 1923, Novaya Moskva started publishing the Komsomoliya magazine, and obtained a second sponsor, the Moscow Komsomol organization. After that, publication of books aimed at a young communist audience became an important line of its publishing business. Around the same time, Novaya Moskva had opened its first three several bookstores in Moscow. By 1927, it had six bookstores in Moscow. The poster lists only four; this, to a degree, confirms our suggested dating.
In 1927, Novaya Moskva was abruptly closed, and its assets were transferred to Moskovsky Rabochy, a publishing house sponsored by the Moscow Communist Party Organization. At least on the surface, this decision had nothing to do with Stalin’s victory over the Trotsky-Kamenev opposition group; one may note though that Kamenev was the publisher’s important patron. Novaya Moskva had published a large number of Kamenev’s books, and in 1922-23 he was listed as its director (this may had something to do with the fact that at the time he was also the Chairman of the Moscow Soviet).
