Description
BYZANTINE PERIOD: 9th - 14th CENTURY A.D.. Eastern Europe. This is a very unusual and scarce bronze artifact from the Ottoman Empire during the Byzantine Period. On occasion, one can find splendid bronze vessels from this era but other bronze art / ceremonial items are highly unusual. The loss of what was once a silvered inner surface and the progressed bronze encrustations and patina demonstrate that this piece pre-dates the later antique or medieval period. As a strainer ladle, it is probable that such an opulent object as this was used in the service of feasts or ceremonial / religious dining.  11.4" (29 cm) long.
