Description

This is a Stanhope novelty lens, which, when viewed, reveals a wonderful microphotographic image of Harry Houdini and his French built Voisin biplane (probably taken on his historic first flight in Australia on March 18, 1910). Houdini is pictured in mid-flight in the upper area of the lens' image, with a separate, posed close-up of Houdini at the controls appearing in the lower area. The lens is mounted in a tiny 1-1/2" long telescope that was most likely made in 1911, in France, by Eugene Raymond. The word "FRANCE " is seen around the end of the eyepiece. (There are known variations on the Houdini-as-aviator Stanhope. We have never seen this one before.) This Stanhope lens is extremely rare. (note: image shown with a yellow background for enhancement purposes, it is actually clear)
