Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 BCE. It's hard to believe that with only simple tools, the ancients of the Andean region of South America could create textiles of such remarkable technique. This is an extremely fine piece, too ornate and delicate to have been intended for utilitarian purposes. Rather it was likely a ceremonial piece. Comprised of camelid wool dyed in jewel tone reds and oranges as well as contrasting black, the textile features stylized jaguars and other animorphic forms. Thick multicolored fringe adorns the piece as well. Mounted on museum quality dark green linen. Textile itself measures ~45"L x 10"W
