Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan, El Salvador/Honduras, ca. 550-950 CE. Large polychrome Mayan olla with vibrant iconography featuring two playful monkeys on opposite sides of the vessel with heads in handbuilt high relief and expressive physical forms with long, curling tails painted in black pigment. The rim of the olla as well as circular designs wre painted in red pigment. Pseudoglyphs adorn the neck of the piece, enhancing the decorative program. The piece also displays generous manganese deposits. 7-1/4" tall x 8-1/2" wide at widest point - most of the vessel at 7-1/4" diameter
