Middle East, Afghanistan, most likely Caspian Sea coast, Coptic, 18th/19th century or earlier. The Coptic Christian Church was founded in Egypt in AD 451 and is closely associated with Constantine's reign. This textile is comprised of several vignettes from the life of Jesus - from top to bottom, Madonna and Child ; Mary and Infant Jesus visited by Archangel Gabriel; finally a nativity scene with Jesus, Mary and Joseph; each scene is surrounded by four angels, likely the four evangelists, Mathew, John, Mark, and Luke. Elegant Resht embroidered medallions and spandrels in the mosaic work technique compliment these religious scenes in a classical design that originated in manuscript designs and has been used in rugs and other media since the 16th century. Beyond the iconography and impressive technique, the piece is also impressive for its stunning range of hues, shades of blue, orange, plum, and variou earth tones work in aesthetic harmony!
