Item Details
Description
Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast of North America between British Columbia and Alaska, Haida or Hydah culture, 18th-19th century. The Haida are highly regarded for their seamanship, trading, military prowess, and craftmanship. One anthropologist Diamond Jenness dubbed the Haida the Vikings of North America. In the same vein as the Vikings, Haida warriors wore various kinds of armour including war helmets, wooden visors to protect their necks, and breastplates that were often concealed under a leather tunic emblazoned with their crests. The Haida replaced the bow and arrow and short spear with firearms as soon as they became available early in the nineteenth century. War daggers, however, continued to be used in close combat. These daggers became something of an art form in themselves and were treasured for many generations within the families of chiefs. This example is carved from bone with a marvelous Tlingit seabird. The handle is wrapped with a piece of hammered copper. Custom museum-quality stand. 14"L x 3"W
